BOARDING HOUSE
Pringle House
MOTTO: TO BE KIND AND HELPFUL TO EVERYONE
——MCS Pringle House——
Pringle House
Pringle House was named after John Summers Pringle, who attended Merchiston from 1896 to 1901. He then studied at Clare College, Cambridge and served in the Great War as Captain, where he received the French Croix de Guerre. He was also a School Governor between 1923 and 1936.
Thanks to the large bequest in 1967 from John Summers Pringle, the large West Ward was converted into three separate small dormitories and Pringle House opened with 13 junior boarders and 5 day boys. Such was the success of Pringle that in 1969 the other Wing was redeveloped to accommodate a growing number of younger boys wanting to join the School and numbers increased to 28. The walled kitchen garden was slowly abandoned and grassed over to create a football pitch and modern showers and recreational rooms were developed through further extension work, along with more spacious residential accommodation for staff.
MAS Pringle House
"To be kind and helpful to everyone" is our promise we make to each other every single day and this is what we, in Pringle, try to bring into everything we do. It is important that the children feel safe and happy in what is their home away from home. So, we encourage every single student to look after each other all the time.
Every day is a busy day.
We wake up at 06:30. Meet downstairs for our Pringle register, house news and promise. Then we all head to breakfast together before our school day begins.
At 17:00 we all meet again in the dining room for dinner. Dinner is followed by home learning in the library and at 18:30 we head outside for what is our favourite time of the day. Play time. The children run around, laughing and just enjoying some free time before we head inside for showers, preparing for the next day and some quiet games. At 20:00 everyone is on their beds for 30 minutes of reading and lights out is 20:30.
We have a designated Head Boy and Head Girl from Year 6, who have additional duties within the house. Our Head Boy and Head Girl are regularly rewarded and recognised for their efforts in the house.
Its important in Pringle to celebrate the little things. We make a point of celebrating everyone's birthdays and every festival is marked with our own special touch.
Pringle is a family. Our fantastic team of staff really care for each and every member of the Pringle family.

Chalmers House
MOTTO: TO BE HONEST AND HAVE INTEGRITY
MAS Chalmers East House and Chalmers West House
——MCS Chalmers House——
Chalmers West House and Chalmers East House
Named after Charles Chalmers, Headmaster of Merchiston 1833 to 1850.
Charles Chalmers, like his famous brother Dr Thomas Chalmers, was a brilliant thinker in Mathematics and Science. In 1828, after a failed career in publishing, he started to coach University students in a house in Park Place, a site now occupied by Edinburgh University's McEwan Hall. Charles found teaching extremely rewarding and in 1833 founded the School within the walls of Merchiston Castle, which stood then in open countryside on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
Chalmers West and Chalmers East Houses opened in the Autumn Term of 1930. This followed the move to Colinton from the old Castle in Bruntsfield and provided a well-equipped, heated boarding house with running hot water for showers and a large day room to relax in. Such luxury had never been available before to the pupils and staff.
Chalmers House
Introduction - Friendships, mixing, managing school and social life.
Chalmers is physically the largest of the three boarding Houses and offers accommodation for male students from Year 7 to Year 13. It is split into Chalmers East and Chalmers West. There are recreation areas on alternate floors and each common area is equipped with a microwave, dishwasher, washer/drier, sink, fridge and TV. Alongside this is soft seating and table and chairs where students can eat snacks together if they wish. Students in Chalmers have rooms with three beds and private en-suite shower and toilets.

We aim to provide top class support for our students with highly qualified teaching staff, a 24 hour medical team and a dedicated and friendly support staff offering laundry three days a week and daily cleaning. Over the years we have taken the time to match our provision to the needs of our Chalmers students and to the expectations of our parents. What we have now is a well-balanced and measured approach to boarding education which will add huge value to any student's education.
The day to day running of the house involves a rigorous routine that blends a need for relaxation and time to build friendships alongside a more regimented attitude toward study. The day starts with a 07:00 morning meeting and registration. This gives us a chance to deliver messages to students and check on things like uniform and general well-being. Students attend breakfast immediately after then head to the classroom for tutor time at 08:00. Our school day runs through until 18:00 for students engaging in CCAs and our evening programme begins at that time. Dinner is served with staff supervision in the school Dining Hall and the students have a brief time after this to socialise, use the school sports facilities, again under supervision, or engage in their own hobbies such as Lego. At 18:45 it is “Prep Time” this takes place in their own rooms and is supervised by houseparents and visiting teachers. After prep the students are given time to relax whilst enjoying a snack provided by school. Between 20:30-21:00, many students chose to make calls home using the landlines installed on each floor. Students get ready for the next school day and begin to shower and prepare themselves for bed at 21:30 with lights out at 21:45. All laptops must be handed in before 21:00.
As part of the education we offer in Chalmers we have a well-established system for rewarding positive behaviour and addressing poor behavioural choices with our Chalmers Code of Conduct. We closely monitor our boys and reward students who contribute to the house or the school, being friendly and respectful and following house routine will provide an opportunity for students to be Chalmers Stars of the Week who are awarded with a special reward and tasty snacks for being top scorers every week. Similarly, we have our Code of Conduct displayed in several areas of the house so we can reference what the house expectations are if we need to challenge students to support their personal growth. The Code of Conduct follows that of the school and the other boarding houses; AY Ready - being prepared for school and studies, AY Respectful - treating every member for the community and all areas of the school with respect and AY Safe - maintaining self-discipline so that everyone is happy and free from harm.
Rogerson House
MOTTO: WE SOAR BY LIFTING OTHERS
Rogerson caters for our female students split into Rogerson North and Rogerson South both with girls from Year 7 to Year 13.
——MCS Rogerson House——
Rogerson House
Named after John Rogerson, Headmaster of Merchiston 1863 to 1898. John Rogerson, affectionately known to all as 'Chief', was Headmaster for over thirty years. During this time, the reputation of the School and the numbers attending steadily increased. He believed that games help to develop character and the School prospered in terms of scholarships and games. Rogerson House opened in the Autumn Term of 1930. This followed the move to Colinton from the old Castle in Bruntsfield and provided a well-equipped, heated boarding house with running hot water for showers and a large day room to relax in. Such luxury had never been available before to the pupils and staff.
MAS Rogerson House
Rogerson caters for our female students split into Rogerson North and Rogerson South both with girls from Year 7 to Year 13. In Rogerson they have common room areas on alternative floors with well equipped kitchens that have dishwashers, fridges, microwaves, washers/driers and recreational areas with TVs, pool tables, small libraries with board games and soft beanbags. Rogerson residential staff live on alternative floors and the house has a team of female visiting tutors each evening. Each floor has rooms that accommodate triple or single beds, all with en-suite showers and toilets.
The Houseparent are always there to support students, even through the school day, leading a team of form tutors who support the students academically and pastorally. In the evenings, the houseparent leads a team of experienced and dedicated team of resident staff, both expatriate and local who live within the house to support students with study, as well as the pastoral needs.
Students are provided with a regular laundry service for their uniform and the rooms are all serviced each day. They are encouraged to make the space their own. Students can also enjoy a comfortable common room on every other floor, with facilities to have provided snacks or make their own snacks at designated times in the evening, play games like chess or scrabble, access the vast boarding libraries filled with literature in English and Chinese, or even watch a movie on Friday and Saturday night with their friends.
MAS is a no smartphone school, but several land lines are located in common rooms, so students can contact parents regularly throughout the week. This allows them to have more focus on their studies, to socialise and play games with friends, and sleep well through the night.
The beauty of the MAS campus is its vast outside space, which includes a running track, basketball court, & football pitch, which students use for lessons and co-curricular activities (CCAs) in the day, but can utilise and enjoy in their free time in the evening or afternoon.
This means a Rogerson student is a very active student both academically, physically, and within the community. Developing their mind, body and spirit of class time also, which is a fundamental part of being an MAS student.
